Like Monet, the Impressionist painter, this Hungarian painter noticed that the brilliancy of the complementary colours red and green seen in a field of poppies in bloom creates the illusion of fantastic vibrations in the beholder's eye. Merse had remained silent for decades but this subject enabled him to make a new start and continue his youthful dreams of colours; it made making a new start easy for him.
