The father, wearing dark clothes, is facing us; he seems almost to disappear in the deep armchair. Uncle Piacsek is shown from the side, his body seems almost to merge with the coloured armrest of his seat. The cramped composition is united by the uniform yellow of the background and the strong red of the tablecloth in the foreground. The emphasis on the figures' features, and the detailed rendering of both the wine glasses and the ewer are references harking back to pictorial methods used in the artist's series of interiors.
