From 1887 until 1889 Ferenczy studied at the Acádemie Julian in Paris. Between 1893 and 1896 he lived in Munich; in 1896 he joined the circle around Simon Hollósy and moved to Nagybánya. He soon dominated this artistic community; the development of the distinctive style of Nagybánya is mainly his work. After 1905, he was one of the directors of the free school of painting.
