In a balanced composition Hans Memling depicts the enthroned Madonna with an angel and a kneeling benefactor flanked to the left by John the Baptist and to the right by John the Evangelist. The artist incorporated small groups of figures into the architectural framework of the middle picture, the sacrifice of Isaac and the decapitation of Saint Catherine; the putti with fruit laurels already show the influence of the Italian Early Renaissance.

Probably commissioned by Jan Crabbe, abbot of the Ter Duinen in Korksijde. A triptych attributed to Hans Memling, which seems to be identical with this work, is described in the Inventories of Margarita of Austria (1516).
