around 1498/1500, Artist: Pietro Vannucci, gen. Perugino
Perugino used his successful inventions time and again. This baptism depiction originates from his fresco in the Sistine Chapel. More important than the composition, however, is the artistic conception: Perugino is one of the first Central Italian artists to experiment with complex oil glazing. Inspired by the Dutch and the Venetians, he studied amongst other things the reflection of light in the air and on water and so set an example for the young Raphael.
