1532 datiert, Artist: Jakob Seisenegger
Charles V was the eldest son of Philipp the Handsome and Joan of Castile. After the death of his grandfather Emperor Maximilian I, he united under his reign the Austrian lands with Spain, the Netherlands, Lower Italy as well as the oversees territories in America. In 1530 he was crowned Emperor. In August 1556, a rare case indeed, he relinquished the Spanish throne in favour of his son, and the Imperial title in favour of his younger brother Ferdinand. The latter commissioned the picture when the Emperor was staying in Bologna.
