The Circumcision of Christ

Arent de gelder received his training in his home town from Samuel van Hoogstraten, and was one of Rembrandt´s last students in Amsterdam. The depiction of the circumcision of Christ is strongly based on Rembrandt´s model, who had depicted this theme on two etchings. Striking similarities can most notably be found in the two priests and the temple´s interior, yet the figures of Mary and the seated man in the foreground to the right are also derived from Rembrandt´s works.
