1651, Artist: Bartolomeus van der Helst
Helst was highly esteemed by his contemporaries and, beginning at mid-century, had a determining influence on the character of portraiture in Amsterdam. The elegant appearance of his subjects was inspired by French art and more in keeping with his clients’ tastes than was the approach of Rembrandt, which had been dominant up to that time.
