around 1630/35, Circle: Jusepe de Ribera, gen. Lo Spagnoletto
Unnoticed by his parents, the twelve-year old Jesus had remained in Jerusalem during the Feast of the Passover and engaged in discussion with the Jewish Scribes who were astounded by his insight and answers. It was not until three days later that Mary and Joseph found him there. The picture, one of the most well-known from the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, was previously attributed to Jusepe de Ribera, court painter to the Spanish viceroys in Naples.
