Queen Elisabeth of Spain

1632, Artist: Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez

Queen Elisabeth of Spain

Elisabeth of Spain (1602–1644), daughter of King Henry IV of France and Maria de Medici, became the first wife of Philip IV in 1615 and was the mother of the Infantas Baltasar Carlos and María Teresa. This portrait, which was probably full-sized to begin with, shows signs of being a workshop collaboration, and was cropped in order to be adapted as a counterpiece to a portrait of the king.

Location: Kunsthistorisches Museum, Kabinett 10
