ca. 1505/10, Artist: Tullio Lombardo
The relief is one of the most beautiful sculptures of the Venetian Renaissance and a major work by Tullio Lombardo, the leading sculptor of the city. He thereby invented a new genre of functionless art expressly for private collectors, who were principally interested in antiquities and paintings: idealized portraits of dreamy figures in an antique style and with the format of an easel painting.
