The emerging fashion of assembling art collections not only required rooms purpose-built or reserved for this purpose – such as the “studiolo“ – but also new types of furniture for storing and presenting the objects collected. In time, these cabinets evolved into elaborate artworks in their own right: usually, the outside is architectonically designed and sumptuously decorated, while the inside contains drawers and niches for the objets d’art.
