For the first time, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna will present an exhibition on the important Baroque painter Rembrandt. Never before has it been possible to admire such a wealth of international loans by the master in Austria.

The First Time in Vienna
Seize the opportunity to experience this outstanding collection of major works by Rembrandt and Hoogstraten in Vienna. Loans from renowned museums all over the world, including the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum, the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum, have made it possible to show these sensational works together for the first time.

The Master and His Pupil
The exhibition tells how Rembrandt’s powerful art left a lasting impression on his gifted pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten and provides unique insights into the fascinating interplay between the master and his pupil.

Around 400 years ago, two famous painters named Rembrandt van Rijn and Samuel van Hoogstraten lived in Amsterdam. Hardly anyone else was as skilled with paint and brushes as these two. The luminous figures in their paintings are deceptively realistic and look really alive!
It almost seems as if we can enter the pictures through the frame and become part of them. Both artists experimented and tried out a lot in order to present the motifs of their paintings in the best possible light. Let's join Rembrandt and his pupil Samuel on a fantastic journey into times long past.
Together we will enter mysterious (picture) rooms, visit the painters in their workshop and interview people from that time. I wonder what they have to tell us? In the studio, you will experiment with a special printing technique, just like Rembrandt. Now you can show the two artists in your works what our world looks like today. True to the motto: pictures create spaces.

Rembrandt – Hoogstraten
This lavishly illustrated volume explores Rembrandt’s work and artistic personality from the perspective of his exceptionally innovative pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten. Van Hoogstraten’s multi-faceted oeuvre clearly betrays the influence of his teacher Rembrandt, in turn Rembrandt was stimulated by the creative impulses he received from the younger colleague. The book highlights two essential aspects of the two artists’ oeuvres: colour and illusion.
