Giorgione
Myth and Enigma
Although Giorgione (1477/78-1510) is today considered the mythical patriarch of 16th century Venetian painting, the inspiration of Titian and others, his oeuvre is extremely small, and little is known about his life. Giorgione combined the sfumato of Leonardo with the colour choices and glazing techniques of Netherlandish artists, giving a new richness to his colours through the use of light.
Through collaboration with the Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice, it has been possible to augment the singular collection of works by Giorgione in the Kunsthistorisches Museum with other key paintings by the master. There are further important loans from the National Gallery, Washington, the Staatliche Museen in Berlin, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum in Budapest.
X-radiographs and infrared photographs of several works provide insights into the artist´s creative process.
