Philipp Schönborn. Collection
Presentation in the Bassano Hall
Sixteen large-scale tableaus by Philipp Schönborn will be on show in the Bassano Hall of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Featuring collections steeped in tradition such as the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne and the Museum Rietberg in Zurich, Schönborn’s coherent presentation is almost a museum in a museum. On closer inspection, however, the tableaus focus on the interaction between photography, the artworks and their display in their respective homes. Thus the photographs are inscribed with their museum origins and the latter’s history. For visitors, this eternal triangle in which art is presented as collected art is a feast for the eyes. Two monumental tableaus produced for this show interpret the Picture Gallery and the Kunstkammer of the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
Philipp Schönborn was born in Prague in 1943, raised in Austria, and now lives in Munich. He began his career as an internationally renowned photographer of contemporary art in the 1980s, and his 2005 solo exhibition at the Museum für Fotografie in Berlin established the artist’s modular form of presentation.
