Diese Gruppe, die zu den frühesten und berühmtesten Kleinbronzen der Renaissance zählt, wurde von Bertoldo di Giovanni modelliert und signiert. Er war Schüler Donatellos sowie Lehrer Michelangelos und gehörte zum Künstlerkreis um Lorenzo de’ Medici, „il Magnifico“. Bellerophon versucht mit Hilfe des Pegasus auf den Olymp zu reiten und scheitert, weshalb er als Sinnbild menschlichen Übermuts gilt.
