Adriaen de Vries, der Kammerbildhauer des Kaisers, verstand es wie kein anderer, den scheuen Herrscher in seinen Bildnissen zu verherrlichen. Diese Büste orientiert sich direkt am Vorbild einer von Rudolf II. erworbenen Büste seines Großonkels, Kaiser Karls V., übertrifft diese aber an majestätischem Pathos. Die Symbole am Sockel beziehen sich auf Würde, Macht und Weisheit des Kaisers.
