Between 1882 and 1884, Iványi Grünwald studied with Bertalan Székey and Károly Lotz at the School of Drawing in Budapest. From 1886 onwards he continued his studies at the Academy in Munich, and attended the Académie Julian in Paris from 1887 until 1890. Iványi Grünwald's style may be characterised as expressive naturalism using subdued colours. He settled at Nagaybánya. Initially his approach to nature, like Hollósy's, was awkward, and his art developed only haltingly.
