From 1884 until 1886, József Rippl-Rónai studied at the Academy in Munich. In 1887 he moved to Paris where he worked for two years as assistant to Mihály Muncácsy. In 1889 he attended the Acádemie Julian. In 1893, he was included in the fifth exhibition organised by the Nabis (Galerie Le Barc de Boutteville). His painting entitled "Grandmother" (exhibited in the Salon de Champ de Mars) was well received in the French press. Soon afterwards Revue Blanc invited him to participate and he became a close friend of Maillol, Bonnard, Vuillard and Denis. In 1895, he published four of his lithographs entitled "Les vierges".
