King Louis II of Hungary as child (1506-1526)

Louis was born in 1506, the son of King Ladislas II of Hungary and Bohemia. At a double marriage in Vienna in 1515, he was married to Archduchess Mary, the granddaughter of Emperor Maximilian I. Following the death of his father in 1516, he became king of Hungary and Bohemia. Louis was killed in 1526 at the Battle of Mohács against the Turks, and in accordance with the testamentary contracts, his thrones fell to the House of Habsburg. Bernhard Strigel, who was court painter to Maximilian, created this portrait following the Vienna meeting of 1515.
