The Lamentation of Christ

around 1519/20, Artist: Andrea d' Agnolo gen. del Sarto

The Lamentation of Christ

The painting is in line with the works of the High Renaissance in its symmetrical arrangement. Yet it has a quite different character on account of the intensified expression and the psychological depiction of the figures in which choice and treatment of colour play a key role. The contrasting tones of yellow-green, pale pink and orange reflect the mental predicament and agitation of the participants who draw the viewer into their lamentation by the close-up depiction.
