about 1605, Artist: Hendrik Avercamp
Hendrick Avercamp was one of the earliest Dutch landscape painters and specialised in winter scenes. The antiquated style with a high horizon, landscape scenery staggered along the sides into the depths of the painting and the wealth of detail are a continuation of the tradition of 16th-century Flemish landscape painting. The lively silhouettes of the figures stand out against the light background, disappearing in the distance in the fog of the broad, flat landscape painted in bird’s-eye view.
