Large Centrepiece in the Shape of a Dragon-bird

In the first cabinet of the Kunstkammer, Archduke Ferdinand II kept the most valuable objects of his collection, including many made from rock crystal. The vessels in bizarre animal forms exhibited here, the so-called “Raiger” (Reiher or herons), can be securely identified in the inventory from 1596. Due to their material worth and the technical difficulty of their production, such objects numbered among the highlights of a princely Kunstkammer.
