um 1583, Artist: Paul Reichel
The ivory shrine
showing a depiction of Death was made by the sculptor Paul Reichel for Archduke
Ferdinand II. Looking at the stone skeleton the spectator sees himself in the
mirrors inside the left and right doors. So he is confrontend with his own
death, an idea which is supported by the apple of paradise, the book and the
hourglass.
