King Joseph I as Victor over the Furor

dated 1693, Artist: Matthias Steinl

King Joseph I as Victor over the Furor

For the election of his son Joseph I as the imperial successor (1690), Emperor Leopold I commissioned two ivory equestrian statues. The statuette with Joseph I shows the youth as the bringer of peace, trampling the figure of the horrors of war. In his double memorial, Steinl created a unique masterwork of Baroque ivory carving with regard to form, technique and content.
