Emperor Maximilian I (1459–1519) commissioned numerous works intended to memorialize himself, his deeds and his dynasty for posterity, among them these two busts depicting him and his mother Eleanor. They must have been conceived for installation in front of a wall, as they are executed in high relief and open at the back. A separately worked crown was probably once affixed to Maximilian’s head.
