The Resurrection

1518, Artist: Albrecht Altdorfer

The Resurrection

The Resurrection and Entombment (Inv. No. GG 6427) are from the predella (base) of the large winged altar at the Abbey of St. Florian in Upper Austria, which is Altdorfer’s principal work. Both have a similar composition with a view from a dark, rocky cave of a group of figures and a landscape. Drama in the scene is created by the blazing light emanating from Christ. The mirroring in nature of the dramatic content of the narrative is characteristic of the Danube school.
