dated 1655, Artist: Meister der Sebastiansmartyrien
The Roman officer Sebastian was martyred for his Christian faith; he was first shot with arrows, and later beaten and thrown into Rome’s sewer. The relief, made from ten ivory plates, shows these events in great detail, full expressivity, and drastic realism, in part with plastic figures sculpted nearly in the round.
