El Greco and his Contemporaries
(1541-1614)
On the 16th of September the exhibition „El Greco“ came to an end. It was the most successful exhibition in Vienna in the last years. Due to the political situation after the terror-attacks in New York and Washington not all loans from the USA have returned home. Among these who remained in Vienna are the „Laocoon“ from Washington, the „View of Toledo“ from New York and the „Portrait of Fray Hortensio Paravicino“ from Boston, some of the highlights of the exhibition. These paintings are still on display in room IX of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In a small exhibition named „El Greco im Umfeld seiner Zeitgenossen“ (= El Greco and his contemporaries) they are presented together with paintings belonging to the KHM by contemporaries of El Greco, among these Caravaggio and Velázquez. So the visitor can see the singularity of El Greco’s oeuvre in comparison to the works of other artists of his time.
