St. Jerome in the Vestments of a Cardinal
Der hl. Hieronymus, einer der vier großen lateinischen Kirchenväter, wurde im 4. Jahrhundert von Papst Damasus beauftragt, die Bibel aus den hebräischen und griechischen Originaltexten ins Lateinische zu übersetzen. Auf diese Weise entstand die „Vulgata”. Der Studienkopf zeigt Hieronymus als Kardinal in rotem Habit und mit Kardinalshut. In der malerisch-weichen, großzügig angelegten Modulation zeigt sich Rubens’ skizzenhafte Handschrift.
