Woman at the Window

dated 1654 | Jacobus Vrel

A darkly dressed woman with a white headscarf leans out of the open window of a sparsely furnished room. The object of her observation, however, remains hidden to the viewer. While a pot hangs over the fire in the chimney, her needlework rests on the table in front of the window. Stylistically related to Vermeer and de Hooch, the early dating of the Vienna painting (1654) argues for Vrel’s role as a forerunner.
