1649/56, Artist: Gaspar de Crayer
In the spirit of the Counter-Reformation, the suffering of Christ and the spiritual agony of Mary in this large-scale figured Pietà are presented to viewers so powerfully that they can both understand and feel it as a direct experience. From the intense mood of this devotional picture we can deduce that van Dyck was the model for the artist.
