1626/28, Artist: Anthonis van Dyck
Van Dyck’s small-format devotional pictures enjoyed great popularity, leading the artist to create numerous replicas. Characteristic of his works is the subtlety with which the figures’ feelings are depicted. So, on the one hand, the picture reflects interaction between the figures as befits a harmonious daily life, while on the other hand tension is created by means of the unstable composition and the disparate facial expressions of the protagonists.
