Study for the Head of an Old Man

Head studies of this monumental type were part of Rubens’s stock of images and were used in various compositions as models for Apostles, philosophers, Fathers of the Church, etc. This approach was in keeping with Rubens’s efficient and rapid method of work and had been in general use since the 16th century in Antwerp (e.g., by Frans Floris and Marten de Vos).
